a judge gun

A Judge Gun - Bob Campbell saw this unique revolver that has become an iconic phenomenon in a very short time. read again

A gun is a reactive device. They are brought upon the person to respond to a threat. They can be kept ready at home to face dangers in the home. If we have a warning, we are often advised to use a rifle or a shotgun.

A Judge Gun

A gun is a weapon of opportunity. While handcuffs are not the most powerful firearms, they are the most likely weapon to have when a firearm is needed to save our lives. I have spent several months evaluating the Taurus Judge and have formed a good opinion of the revolver for specialized use.

The Taurus Judge Story

The Judge is a 5-shot revolver that loads either .410 shotgun shells or .45 Colt cartridges. This means real versatility. In the same way, the design limits the accuracy and range of the revolver. As a pure close range home defender, the Taurus Judge has merit.

There are many arguments that it is important to hit the target quickly and that a shot - any shot - is very fast. this is true. I've learned that it's better to slow down and hit center than to miss fast. This doesn't mean a quick shot can't be done; It just demands practice.

Judges address this need by offering a shot load. The .410 bore isn't a powerhouse, but with the right load—and here's the key—it offers a viable defensive option. Surprisingly, my assessment suggests that the Taurus Judge may be viable for protection from predators even at close range. My test piece was probably the most common Judge (there are many to choose from), a steel-frame revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel.

The revolver is much lighter, handles better than its awkward appearance, and offers good hit probability for practitioners. Fit, finish and smoothness of action are good. The revolver has a red fiber optic front sight. This sight provides a good point of aim and helps in quick target acquisition.

Short barreled pistols with smooth bores firing shotgun shells are illegal, the .410 and .45 Colt are so close that Taurus was able to design and manufacture a revolver chambered for both the .410 shotgun shell and the .45 Colt cartridge. There is rifling but it is quite shallow.

Like all double-action revolvers, the Judge is easy to handle. Open the cylinder, load the chamber and press the trigger to fire. There is no slide for the rack, and no safety to operate. The concept is to allow the shooter to hit faster with a loaded shot. Although each buckshot pellet does not have much energy, the impact load of multiple bullets at once provides excellent injury potential.

You may have seen videos and malicious propaganda where a Taurus judge is fired at a target and the target is aligned with the shot. Birdshot is a short shot grade intended to humanely kill birds with a few shots. It is not useful for personal security in any way. Like full-sized shotguns, birdshot is suitable for practice but not for personal defense. A bird shot charge of 7 to 9 shots carries hundreds of small pellets that form a pattern.

In the typical personal defense range, this pattern runs from 18 to 32 inches. That's 7 yards, more than that bird shot is useless. Worse, short shots only penetrate a few inches. A performer wearing a heavy winter jacket can't hurt. At about 15 feet, the Federal 4 Buckshot load, containing #3 Buckshot, maintained a consistent pattern of less than three inches. It is the load of choice for those who use the .410 load for personal defense.

New Jersey's New Gun Law Partially Paused By Federal Judge

Federal loads are advertised at around 750 fps but have actually clocked over 800 fps in the Judge. The total load is 292 grains. Winchester offers PDX loads with three flat disc loads and BB shots with total loads of more than 300 grains. With this load, the pattern is often fairly large (as much as 16 inches at 15 feet) with the disc in the center of the target.

The Hornady .410 Defense load consists of two round balls followed by a .41 caliber slug. The slug usually tracks straight along the point of aim with the ball radiating out around the center. It is important that you pattern the shot on a paper target to determine how the shot spreads at 5 to 10 yards.

In my opinion, 7 yards is the outer limit for this load, although the Hornady Slug with its FTX design might be useful a little more. Bottom line, buckshot and specialty loads are useful for home defense and close range defense against hunters. Penetration tests in a jug of water and wet newsprint showed that this load would produce severe wounds.

Birdshot can enter a six-inch gallon jug and a few shots will make it into another jug, but very little. Federal 2 ½ inch shells with 4 OOO balls penetrate over 24 inches, which can be linked up to 18 inches in gelatin. that's very good.

Taurus Judge: A Gun So Powerful It Can Fire A Shotgun Shell

The Winchester PDX load exhibits a larger pattern. However, the three discs in the PDX provide a 3×4 pattern at 15 feet. A very large pattern consists of 12 BBs. Hornady FTX slugs penetrate 15 inches from this revolver, with two round balls collecting a total of 3 to 5 inches at 15 feet.

This heavy load should produce devastating results from 15 feet to maybe 21 feet, a magical 7 yard average range. Really more likely to be in the living room or bedroom. Value either target should be accurate, but the pattern is spread out enough to help hit from 10 to 15 feet. With a shot load this gun is useless beyond 21 feet.

Another option is to load the Judge with .45 Colt ammunition. To comply with federal laws related to handguns and ammunition, Hakim carried a .45 Colt revolver with the option to fire .410 rounds. The barrel is hit. The long jump of the .45 Colt bullet from the chamber to the throat of the barrel seems to limit both velocity and accuracy. This is true in some cases. However, my latest tests show that this damage is not as common as we think.

Judge is strong enough for the heaviest loads including hand loads of hard cast SWC bullets. It depends on how much repetition tolerance you have. Hornady Critical Defense is a good choice for personal protection. This 185 grain bullet has a good reputation for expansion and penetration. Velocity is 891 fps obtained from the Taurus Judge's three-inch barrel. Shrinkage is small. This weight is about the target point. At 15 yards, five shots were fired from a sturdy bench seat firing position, producing 3-inch groups. It is accurate enough for personal defense.

Another option worth considering is the Winchester PDX 225-Grain JHP. This load delivers a heavy hitter at 780 fps. The weight of this bullet provides great speed. The .45 Colt is one of the few pistols that works well without expanding ammo. This was evident in the Old West and in many engagements since then.

The Winchester 255-grain lead ammo is a solid choice. This bullet comes out of the judge at 770 fps. (And 778 fps from a 4 ¾-inch revolver is available for comparison.) Penetration is about 18 inches, perfect for personal defense, yet recoil is light. It's also a fairly accurate load with 3-inch, 15-yard groups. If the owner expects a longer shot, the .45 Colt offers proven wound capacity without high recoil.

Judge is a specialized gun. It is by no means a well-known gun anywhere. But what it does, it works well. The Investigating Judge is worth your time.
