2011 Race Gun - Staccato XL Competition 2011 This fast, even competition 9mm with an extended range radius is ideal for pistol competition and tactical games

At 38 ounces, the Staccato XL meets all division weight limits under USPSA, Steel Challenge and IDPA rules.

John Browning's classic 1911 design remains a force in the pistol competition, but received a significant makeover when STI took the basic design and turned it into a powerful, wide-body pistol. These pistols proved extremely popular, and although the STI is now known as the Staccato, the trend continues. At the 2021 USPSA Nationals, several shotgun models, the STI and Staccato, were the most used by Open Class shooters (29 percent of them selected), followed by the Limited and L10 (18 percent).

The Staccato XL ($3,599, staccato2011.com) is a 2011 full-size pistol that includes the Staccato FlaTec recoil mitigation system. The all-steel construction results in an empty weight of 38 ounces (without magazine) and meets all USPSA, Steel Challenge and IDPA weight limits. The stainless steel barrel is 5.4 inches in diameter with a 1:16-inch twist, with a well-formed feed bevel and a recessed target. Like other 2011 models, the Staccato XL eschews the original barrel and uses a tapered barrel. Front and rear serrations adorn the slide, and a Picatinny rail on the dust cover allows mounting of a light or laser.

Sights consist of a Dawson Precision front end in a mount with a replaceable fiber optic ribbon. The gun comes with a red bar, but any color can be installed. The target is Staccato 2011 T.A.S. adjustable with plain black blade. For those looking to mount an optional scope, Dawson Precision has an optic-ready system ($139.95) that lets you mount a number of popular SLRs.

Controls consist of a left extended magazine release, an extended safety for two-handed firing, and a left bolt release lever. The G2's grips are well placed on the front, side and rear straps, and the enlarged magazine opening is large enough to go unnoticed. The safety catch has a lowly police officer lying down.

As for the trigger pull, I measured 2.6 pounds on my digital gauge with a light pull, clean break and quick reset.

The Staccato XL comes in a soft case with two 17-round magazines, one 20-round magazine, interchangeable red and white scopes, the ubiquitous cable lock, and an instruction manual.

I made a quick tape to grease the gun out of the box. I was surprised at how easy it was to throw the bolt and I had to assume it was because of the FlaTec recoil system. Without a barrel sleeve, disassembly is simple: slide the bolt back into the witness cutout, pull out the bolt rod, and slide the upper unit out of the frame. The process is much less complicated than for the 1911.

The main role of the Staccato XL is to be a small caliber shotgun (125 power factor), so I wanted to test different bullet weights. Some shooters prefer the softer recoil of a heavier bullet, while others prefer the recoil of lighter bullets and feel that they return to the target faster.

For the heavy bullet I used the Federal Sintech 150 grain load, which has proven popular and effective. The 123-grain Lapua FMJ and the 115-grain Remington FMJ made up the mid-weight loads.

Sti .40 S&w Executive 1911 Review

Steel Challenge has no power factor and the lightest recoil is preferred by smart shooters. For that reason, I included the Atlanta Arms 100-grain FMJ Steel Challenge load. I've never chronographed this load, but based on the recoil it produces, it doesn't come close to 125 PF. Atlanta Arms notes that some rifles may need a lighter recoil spring for reliable operation, and I thought this would be a good test for the Staccato FlaTec recoil system.

For a true "Mouse Puff" load, I also included my personal Steel Challenge 9mm load. It's a 125-grain DG lead bullet, enough for the VihtaVuori N310 to hit 930 fps. and withdraw the fired cases from the ejection port. The recoil is not much more than a .22 high velocity long rifle pistol load. We Smith & Wesson M&P C.O.R.E. will withstand this load if cleaned before a match, but many other weapons will not. It does, however, make it easier for me to mine the brass because it will all be in a neat pile two feet to my right.

I then headed to the range in the back yard and aimed the gun at 25 yards with a medium weight Lapua load. At first it was a bit tall and straight, but you quickly got the hang of it. This was followed by an inspection of each of the loads, observing not only feeding and functioning, but also the discharge pattern.

Standard pressure loads from Federal Sintech, Lapua, and Remington all showed an energetic throw of about 4.5 feet and about 30 degrees to the rear. Atlanta Arms' 100-grain load broke out about three feet at 30 degrees. My "Mouse Puff" load did the same thing as my gun and ended up in a neat pile two feet to my right. The Staccato XL seems to be no less sensitive to ammo.

Unable to find a suitable legal holster for the 5.4-inch barrel in my collection, I set up white cut-off targets and fired transition drills from the low-ready position at 10 to 20 yards. All three magazines were used, and as usual with a new magazine, loading through them was a little difficult at first, but became easier with use.

The gun purred along with all the rounds and magazines. Clear sights and a sleek trigger made it easy to hit quickly, but what stood out was the lack of muzzle rise and fast movement. Not to say there was no muzzle rise, but the gun shot much smoother than I expected, especially with the factory full power load. I do these transition drills with the PACT Club timer and feel good about my regular splits with a semi-auto or revolver. The lighter recoil and faster cycle made the Staccato XL run noticeably faster.

Next up was an accuracy test from my 25 yard bench. As the accompanying accuracy chart shows, this gun will shoot.

Former Navy SEAL Laurent Picard was one of several experienced shooters impressed by the Staccato XL's straight shooting and fast cycle. Note that the gun is level on the next target and the fired case is less than 10 inches from the ejection port. (Photo by Chris Christian)

No case meant no match, so I took the Staccato XL to my local club's Steel Challenge practice and put the steel on the line. I had enough Remington 115 grains and used them. The Staccato XL caught the attention of other shooters (some in the Grand Master, Master or A ranks) who all wanted to try it out. They were as impressed as I was with the flat shooting and fast cycle features. And I was even more impressed when I told them they were taking off the factory loads at full power.

To this point, over 600 rounds have gone through the gun with just my original tape and lube and not a single failure of any kind. The 2011 Staccato XL 9mm is a worthy addition to an already popular line of pistols.

Accuracy testing was done from a sandbag bench at 25 yards. Group size claimed to be the average of three groups of five circles, measured center to center in inches.
