"This seemed really interesting and intriguing to this writer and many TFB readers, so I asked Mike to share more details and photos of the project and to allow me to use the information to write an article about his Tommy gun. It started with a combination of all the parts that Mike had on hand that he thought would be suitable for use in the Thompson submachine gun replica project. In particular, he had a genuine Thompson SMG stock that he bought at a gun show ten years ago, and several Ruger 10/22 parts (bolts, fire control groups, various magazines) sitting in several spares boxes.
With the decision to use said parts, Mike began designing the rest of his Tommy gun around it. Newly designed parts include upper and lower receiver, pistol grip and forend, trigger, muzzle device, rear sight shield, etc. Most of these parts are machined from solid material on the Haas mini mill machine An exception is the rear sight shield created by cutting square steel tube pieces The rear sight itself is a Williams Pip sight
The 10/22 trigger mechanism part and new trigger are held together in the original 10/22 trigger guard assembly housing, however, Mike cut the actual trigger guard because the lower receiver he designed has an integrated trigger guard. This change made the fire control group assembly from the 10/22 trigger guard assembly that was inserted into the lower receiver of the Mike's Tommy gun.

Cuts pattern compensators are fired into the barrel to obtain the 16.1 inch overall barrel length required by the rifle's legal definition. Original Tommy gun barrel with compensator cut is about 12 inches long In general, increasing the barrel length of a firearm to meet legal requirements looks ugly compared to the original gun However, as you can see, even though it has an inch-long barrel, Mike's gun isn't a perfect fit. How is this possible? Well, the trick is to create some sort of optical illusion by making the arms longer and thus maintaining a barrel-to-forehead length ratio similar to the original Thompson SMG. This is a pretty cool solution!
Mike's replica tommy gun looks really cool with the drum magazine As you can see in the photo above, the curved 10/22 magazine doesn't look as good as the original Thompson submachine gun box magazines are straight. Due to the design of the framed cartridge it is really difficult to make a reliable high capacity .22LR magazine without this curve. A forged straight magazine body with a 10 round 10/22 mag attached could be a solution if the Thompson SMG wants to have a magazine that looks like a box magazine.
It's a really cool project, isn't it? Although many borrowed parts are used, it's still a pretty complex and advanced project that requires a lot of design and manufacturing skills to pull off. Of course, it's not a 100% exact replica in every little detail, but it looks really good for the amount of 10/22 parts used. This gun should have a bit of customization potential with aftermarket 10/22 parts including screws and trigger mechanism components. I think Mike's Ruger 10/22 method of making a replica gun with such extensive use of parts can be applied to making rimfire replicas of other historic firearms that are hard to find due to their rarity and high cost.
