Fort Desoto Camping Reservations - The Parks & Conservation Resources Office is located at 12520 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Reservations for Fort De Soto campsites and all park reservations can be made online or at this office.

All youth camps at Wall Springs Park and Fort De Soto Park require reservations and permits.

All Shell Key campers must have a Shell Key Permit. Permits cost $6 per day, with a limit of six guests per permit. Campers must be listed on a permit. Boat registration is required.

Permits & Reservations

Please respect and appreciate the beautiful natural resources of the Shell Key Preserve. Shell Key Preserve is an ecologically sensitive area and proper management is required to ensure that the islands and waterways remain safe for future generations. It is important to follow the Shell Key Preserve rules, because through your actions, the Shell Key Preserve can be a welcoming place for generations.

A "leave no trace" etiquette for visitors is expected to be maintained at all times. Access to Shell Key is by boat only. There are no facilities at Shell Key Preserve, and campers are required to bring, use and remove portable toilets. Camping is only permitted in the southern public use area. In this designated area there are no designated campsites so visitors are free to choose their preferred location. Alcohol, pets, trash, litter, fireworks and excessive noise are prohibited at all times in the preserve.

Shell Key Camping Permit does not include Fort De Soto boat ramp and parking fees. Separate boarding fees are permitted. Overnight parking is permitted at the Fort De Soto boat ramp. Spread over a series of islands off the coast of Tampa Bay, Fort DeSoto Park is the largest in Pinellas County. Parks maintained by the Pinellas County Department of Conservation, the park covers more than 1,000 acres and offers three miles of white sand beaches and seven miles of waterfront. The park welcomes more than 2 million visitors a year, and many of these visitors visit Fort DeSoto for camping opportunities.

Things To Do When Visiting Fort De Soto Park In St. Petersburg, Florida

Fort DeSoto has 238 campsites and a premier youth camp area dedicated to groups. Each campsite has electricity and water, charcoal grills and tables. The pages are divided into two sections; The first reserved tents, vans and campers, and the second accepts all types of camping. Campers at Fort DeSoto have access to laundry facilities, sinks and restrooms with showers. The complex also includes picnic and play areas, and a camp store.

Reservations for campsites at Fort DeSoto Park can be made online or in person at the Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Office. Non-residents can make reservations up to six months in advance. District residents can make reservations up to seven months in advance if they reserve in person at the administrative offices. Full payment is required to confirm the reservation, and no cash is given. If the reservation is canceled before 1 p.m. on the day of arrival the guest will receive a one-year credit. Campsites can be reserved for up to 14 days and during the holidays can be renewed for up to 14 more days if space is available. The first youth zone is free and can be reserved by phone up to three months in advance.

Campgrounds are limited in the number of vehicles allowed based on the type of site. The park also requires an adult to be present at each park and enforces a quiet time every evening from 10 p.m. Alcohol is not allowed in any part of the park, and swimming is prohibited in the camping area.

The park allows pets in some parts of the campground. Pets must be on a leash unless they are in the dog park at the far end of the complex. There is also a dog beach, one of the few places in the area where dogs are allowed on the beach.

Fort DeSoto Park offers recreational opportunities including two parks, numerous trails and a boat launch. Visitors can learn about the fort's history by visiting the Quartermaster's Museum for free and touring the ruins, including the mortar battery, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pagans can fish in the beaches and canals on both sides of the park, both of which are equipped with concessions for the sale of bait and fishing equipment. New Year At Cayo Costa

On the way to Fort Desoto from Alafia River we stopped to pick up our new bikes in Tampa. We left the RV in the large parking lot of Home Depot in St. Louis. Petersburg, and then through Tampa.

Downtown Tampa has excellent bike infrastructure. Bike signs take forever though. We learned from one area that they consider them recommendations rather than law. This makes sense because otherwise you can wait a long time for it to change.

We've been on the road for almost a year now, and Fort Desoto is one of our favorite parks. And we didn't even find any water!

We were at site 114 which backs onto the main road. This place is better, because on one side there is a water tower. So you have a good buffer there. On the other hand, there's a little green between you and your neighbor, but it's still pretty close. You can also go right by bathroom #4 and set up some chairs in the public area near the water, which is what we did one day.

The campground itself is fun to drive. We always find empty seats in section 1 and 3 where we can enjoy the view.

If you want to get in more biking, there are trails all over the park. We drove to the beach many times. The Surly Ogres handled the sand roads like champions! Oh, and this sand is really nice. It's like sugar.

And on the fortress, we were on the war again! They have an icon and a cannon. It is quite produced.
