Balfour Beatty Communities And Fort Carson Begin Demolition For New Military Housing

More than 25,000 soldiers work at Fort Carson. Add your family members who are old enough to need identification. Mix in over 3,000 government civilians and another 800 government entrepreneurs. Now add in the retirees who live near the station, plus the National Guard and Reserves, and the number of people who need IDs is much higher.

The Post has one facility that serves all of these groups - the Fort Carson ID Card/DEERS Center in Building 1039. This center issues both DoD ID cards and Common Access Cards, which are used to access government computer networks by mail.

With so many clients needing ID renewals, new registrations, address changes, and/or Defense Enrollment Enrollment System (DEERS) updates, it's easy to imagine how much activity takes place at the center each day. .

"Afternoons are incredibly busy," said Fort Carson ID/DEERS Chief Michael Pearson. "Our waiting room is particularly full just before and after a bank holiday."

The facility has 68 seats, most of which are filled every minute of every working day. Although staff are welcome to walk in, the wait time for these people can be longer than 90 minutes.

However, there is a cure for the long wait, Pearson added. He and the ID/DEERS center staff recommend that clients make an appointment online at https://rapids-appointments.dmdc.osd.mil before visiting.

"The website allows clients to schedule appointments based on available appointments for future dates," Pearson said. "This is truly the best way to experience the ID/DEERS process. Service to those making an appointment is almost instantaneous, and depending on the type of support needed, most clients complete the ID process within 30 minutes.

Of course, ID/DEERS users can also save on future trips to the center by bringing relevant documents and records. A list of required documents and identification can be found on the Fort Carson website at http://www.carson.army.mil. Visitors should then select ID Card/DEERS under the Retiree Services tab.
