Camp Carson was established in 1942 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The city of Colorado Springs, Colorado, purchased land south of the city and donated it to the War Department. Construction began immediately and the first building, the camp headquarters, was completed on January 31, 1942. Camp Carson was named for the legendary Army explorer Geral Christopher "Kit" Carson, who explored much of the West in the 1800s.

At the height of construction, nearly 11,500 workers were working on various construction projects in the new camp. Services were provided for 35,173 listed m, 1,818 clerks and 592 nurses. Almost all the buildings were of mobilization type construction, with wooden sides. The hospital complex was constructed of concrete block and was considered semi-permanent and had space for 1,726 beds, expandable to 2,000 beds.

The 89th Infantry Division was the first large unit to be activated at Camp Carson. During World War II, more than 100,000 soldiers trained at Camp Carson. Along with three other infantry divisions - the 71st Infantry Division, 104th Infantry Division and 10th Mountain Division - more than 125 units were activated at Camp Carson and more than 100 units were transferred to the mountain post from other installations.

Nurses, cooks, donkey packers, tank battalions, a Greek infantry battalion and an Italian company trained at Camp Carson during the war years. Camp Carson was also home to nearly 9,000 Axis prisoners of war - mostly Italians and Germans. Internmt Camp Carson began on the first day of 1943. These POWs alleviated Colorado's labor shortage by doing general farm work, canning tomatoes, chopping corn, and helping with logging on Colorado's western slope.

From 1942 to 1956, pack mouths were a common sight at Camp Carson. The first ship arrived by train from Nebraska in July 1942. The mule was used by Field Artillery (Pack) battalions to transport supplies, weapons and equipment over mountainous terrain. The most famous of these animals was the Hambone, the pride of the 4th Field Artillery Battalion[2]. For 13 years he transported first sergeants on Ute Pass to Camp Hale. Camp Hale, near Leadville, Colorado, was where the Army conducted cold weather and mountain warfare training. Hambone died in March 1971 and was buried with full military honors.

And on December 16, 1949, the Strategic Air Command opened a survival school at Camp Carson for training in mountainous terrain (moved to Stead Air Force Base, Nevada in 1952).

Camp Carson was renamed Fort Carson in 1954. In the 1960s, the fort was assigned mechanized units and expanded to 137,000 acres (55,000 ha). Butts Army Air Field at the fort was built between 1963 and 1966 with a 4,573-foot (1,394 m) runway for light fixed-wing aircraft (see USAF C-130 at nearby Peterson Air Force Base).

Fort Carson has had nine divisions in its history. An additional 235,000 acres (95,000 ha) of training ground was acquired in September 1983. The training area, called the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, is located about 150 miles (240 km) over the road miles to the southeast and is used for large-scale force-on-force maneuver training. Extensive maneuver and live fire training also takes place at Fort Carson.

Exercises and deployments constantly improve the skills of Soldiers at Fort Carson. When not deployed, Soldiers train annually at the Piñon Canyon Maneuvering Site and National Training Center near Barstow, California. In addition, units participate in joint exercises around the world, including in Central and South Africa, Europe and Southwest Asia. In 2003, most Fort Carson units were deployed in support of Operations Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Troops from the CO of the 984th Military Police, 759th Military Police BN also supported the guard mission at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba. President George W. Bush addressed the troops and their families on November 24, 2003, praising the determination of the soldiers and the sacrifices of their families.

Construction in 2007 and 2008 preceded the return of the 4th Infantry Division (4ID) from Fort Hood following its deployment from Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008 (approximately 5,000 additional troops).

On February 14, 2007, the US Army announced that it was moving forward with plans to expand the Piñon Canyon maneuver area in southeastern Colorado.

If expanded, the Piñon Canyon would be the largest Army training area in the country, tripling its current area, adding 418,000 acres (1,690 km).

Many local citizens against the plan because a large part of the countryside that will be added to the training site is ranch land owned by civilian owners, and many current landowners do not want to be displaced, regardless of compensation. can be offered. The Pinon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition, an activist group opposed to the plans, says previous maps obtained from the military show a "future expansion area" that is significantly larger than currently thought. The Army's position is that the expansion is essential to preparing soldiers for combat in ever-growing theaters such as Afghanistan and the Middle East.

On November 25, 2013, the US Army announced that its plan to expand the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Area has been canceled.

In response to Congress' ban on funding for the military's expansion plan, the United States Air Force launched a plan to use the area for V-22 Osprey flights.

The exercise is expected to last several hours. Military aircraft are used to transport casualties from the exercise to a local hospital. Several county and city first responders will participate in the exercise, either as responders, observers or evaluators.

Service members, families and civilian employees should expect increased traffic flow and some delays as garrison personnel response elements respond to the scenario. They should take extra precautions in this area and allow extra time for postal travel if necessary.

The exercise includes first responders (law enforcement, fire and rescue services); establishment of an emergency operations center by the Directorate of Planning, Training, Mobilization and Security; and the deployment of nearly all elements of the US Army Garrison-Fort Carson headquarters, along with some divisional units, to support first responders.
