Beetle Bailey Comic - September 4 marks the 70th anniversary of Beetlejuice's first comic strip in the comic pages. Mort Walker created the Beetle as a college student, but the comic strip quickly adopted his theme when our hero joined the Army during the Korean War.

Of course, our lazy hero didn't make it out of boot camp to see action on the front lines. "Beetle Belly" excels at capturing common experiences and exaggerating them for comedic effect.

The cast remained mostly the same. Sergeant Snorkel, his dog Otto, Private "Killer" Tiller, General Halftrack, and secretary Miss Pixley accompany nearly the entire strip. Camp Swampy may have been slightly modernized over the years, but today's version of the strip is instantly recognizable to fans of the Beetle's early days.

Seventy years is 25,550 strips. Most of these were published under the supervision of creator Mort Walker until his death in January 2018. The business remains in the family, with his sons Greg, Brian and Neil Walker now behind the day-to-day operations.

At the height of the newspaper business, "Beetle Belly" appeared in nearly 1,800 newspapers worldwide. The strip is still widely syndicated, but a new generation of fans are enjoying it online at the Comics Kingdom website. You can read each day's strip for free, but a $19.99 annual subscription gives you an ad-free experience and access to the site's comic archives for dozens of strips.

Greg, Brian and Neil caught up with us over the phone to talk about growing up with their dad and their "big brother" Beatle. Here are some facts they shared.

The Fabuleous Fifties: My Mort Walker Tribute Pt. 2

Brian Walker said the Beetlebelly was designed to represent military life only. "Our dad always said, 'Beetbelly' is not a piece about the military. It's a piece about funny people thrown together to work in an organization." It could be an office, it could be a school. Or a fire station, or a police department. They have a role in that system. That's where the humor comes in. "None of this is specific to the military."

Greg says Mort doesn't believe the piece will survive after the war ends. "The war was born during the Korean War, and when it was over, Dad created "Hi and Lois" because he didn't really think the appeal of the Army Belt would carry over to Vietnam. During the war, surprisingly, we held on. The papers didn't let it go, and people still enjoyed it. .

Brian believes keeping the Beetle close to home is key to the comic's success. "We've had letters from people asking us to send it to Iraq or Afghanistan. My dad always said, 'I'd rather have it in Camp Swamp. There's not much humor in a war zone. It always hurts the Beetle.' from afar

He adds, "We keep it in basic training because everyone goes through it, but not everyone goes to war. Some people become secretaries or they stay at home or run offices around the world, but everyone goes to basic training. It's the same thing. Relatable."

Brian also mentions that there was some conflict in the family in the late 60s. "Greg and I were definitely anti-war during the Vietnam War. We certainly had some lively conversations with my dad in those days, because he was an Army veteran and relatively conservative.
