Here we are: After years of announcements and delays—the latest during the 2018 SHOT Show—it seems now is the time for US gun enthusiasts to finally get their hands on one of the most controversial rifles of the 20th century, the Automag. Let's take a brief look at its history.

Cartridge Similar To .357 Amp

The Automag M-180 pistol was designed in 1966 by Max Gera, who within a few years convinced entrepreneur Henry Sanford to start a company to manufacture it. Automag production actually began in 1970 at the Auto Mag Corporation plant in Pasadena, California. The main feature of the Automag was the cartridge it fired, the .44 Auto Magnum pistol, a rimless, pump-up version of the .44 Magnum, chambered in a shortened .308 Winchester chamber, forces a 240-grain bullet. a respectable speed of 460 meters per second. Despite the interest generated by the trade press and the pistol appearing in several blockbuster movies, the company closed its doors after about a year of operation and the production of about 3,000 pistols. In recent decades, the Automag project has been taken over by several American companies that have tried to revive it, but always with little success. The main problem with the Automag has always been the fact that, unlike what happened with the 10mm auto caliber Bren Ten, no company has ever commercially produced a .44 AMP caliber cartridge, and of course this has always kept the pistol's popularity disabled.

After so many announcements, the South Carolina-based company Auto Mag Ltd finally came along and bought all the rights to the project in 2015. From now on, the first 25 pistols in the 8.5”/216 mm barrel version can be reserved via the company's website. The Automag is also available with a 6.5”/165mm barrel. Reservations can be made through the configurator, which allows you to choose the finish and other details, such as the material of the handles. The company says the weapon has been redesigned using the most modern technologies and materials, but the basic platform is still original, with a short recoil system with a rotating head bolt - very similar to the semi-automatic AR-15. gun system.

The trigger is single-action only, the single-stack magazine holds seven rounds. Sights consist of an adjustable rear sight and bladed front sight mounted on a nice 1970s style vented rib. Classic Edition mod with 8.5 inch barrel. The D is sold at an attractive price of $3,795 (approximately €3,200). Is this good or is it another false start? The fact that owners of this gun are forced to use manual reloading of ammunition (the dies are made by Hornady) is a deterrent to its popularity, but the nostalgia operation is commendable and we wish Automag a final return and the range.

The delivery of the first batch of Automag pistols has already started. The gun is in an elegant box with two magazines.
