40 mm handgun

40 Mm Handgun - Key point:  The .40 was developed to provide law enforcement with a more powerful handgun than the 9mm originally.

Times are always changing, and that applies to the gun world as well. What we're seeing now is a shift to 9mm at the expense of the .40 S&W.

For example, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently switched from the .40 S&W to the 9mm Luger, specifically the Glock 22 and 23, to the Glock 17 and 19. The US Army seriously considered converting to .40, but ultimately stuck with the 9mm when they chose the SIG Sauer M17 as their new service weapon. And police departments across the country trade in .40 caliber 9mm revolvers.

It's not hard to see why. Although the 9mm FMJ is a weak round, there are many self-defense blanks used by civilians and law enforcement today. As a result, the demand for .40 has decreased significantly, and in addition, 9mm revolvers hold more bullets and have easier recovery.

You see, the reason the 40 was invented was to give law enforcement a more powerful handgun than the 9mm. Yes, the .45 ACP was out, but the .45 revolvers were very limited in capacity. That's why the 10mm was made, but the recoil the round created was a little too much for some, and shorter than the .40 S&W we have today.

The .40 S&W has served well for many years and will continue to do so for many years to come, but as discussed, the transition to a power stop round has been greatly improved with a lighter and more manageable package. Why did we see .40 pistols replaced by 9mm?

But at the same time, this change from the .40 there are many surplus caliber .40 revs on the market today, most of which are available at below average prices. And just because the .40 caliber itself isn't as popular as it once was doesn't mean it isn't an effective defensive weapon.

In fact, .40 is the third most popular caliber today behind 9mm and .45 ACP, and it's also the easiest to find. For these reasons, a .40 caliber handgun is always the best choice for self-defense or home defense, and again, high-end handguns and police transactions mean you have many options at budget prices.

What makes the Beretta Px4 Storm an attractive option for .40 is its capacity: 14+1 rounds in the full-size version and 12+1 in the Compact model, which is the kind of capacity you'd expect in a 9mm. Gun.

The Px4 deserves a spot on this list because its rotating barrel design helps reduce the extra recoil created by the heavy .40 caliber round. The pistol is safe to handle thanks to the double trigger pull and manual slide safety, which functions like the Beretta 92 series decocking lever.

The Px4 comes with an ML-STD 1913 Picatinny Rail and a rear pistol grip for a variety of hand sizes.

Want to know which .40 pistol holds more bullets than the Beretta Px4 Storm Compact? The most popular law enforcement pistol ever made: the Glock 22, with a 15+1 round capacity.

The Glock 22 has been shot more than any other current United States police officer, which is quite a feat. The Gen 5 version has just been released, with many improved features such as different ergonomics and a better-firing mag to make reloading much easier.

Basically, the Glock 22 is identical to the Glock 17, only chambered in .40 instead of 9mm. A slight variation of the Glock 22 in .40 that holds 13+1 bullets is called the Glock 23 and is similar to the Glock 19.

The Heckler & Koch USP is a fully designed .40 caliber pistol. This is in stark contrast to other revolvers on the market that are chambered in .40 for 9mm.

Since the .40 caliber is a high-pressure round, this means that the 9mm frames in the .40 will generally have a shorter life span than the 9mm. But because the HK USP is chambered in .40 caliber, it can withstand several thousand rounds before needing parts replacement.

Otherwise the HK USP is a full size duty pistol with 13+1 rounds of .40 in the magazine. A compact variant, about the same size as the Glock 19 and easier to conceal, holds 12+1 rounds.

The USP is a single-action double-action pistol with a frame-mounted safety and decorative lever. The safety can be done without decorating the handgun, so the revolver can be loaded and locked like a 1911, and make your first shot a single good and strong action.

There are currently a large number of surplus and law enforcement trades in the SIG Sauer P226 and P229 revolvers. These guns may be well worn on the outside, but on the inside they are very lightly shot and in good condition.

Whether you're going with a vintage or new SIG, you're sure to have a quality gun. While both the P226 and P229 hold 12+1 rounds per factory magazine, an aftermarket quality Make-Gar magazine will extend this capacity to 13 or 14 rounds.

The P226 and P229 are double-action single-action pistols with no manual safety. But there are also versions of them favored by law enforcement officers that only have a simple double action. These are called DAK revolvers, and they are among the most popular options offered at budget prices.

Like the HK USP, the Smith & Wesson M&P is built on a .40 caliber frame, which should provide a longer service life than other .40 rifles.

A full-size M&P pistol can hold 15+1 rounds when chambered in .40, giving it roughly equal firepower to a Glock 22. The Compact 2.0 model holds 13+1 rounds, and is slightly smaller for concealed carry.

The M&P has proven itself to be a very reliable assault rifle and has also found its way into police stations across the United States. 2.0M&Ps are also very aggressive in the grip, which is becoming common in handguns in today's world.

Walther pistols like the P99 and PPQ are known to be among the most powerful pistols on the market today. The P99 itself is a very different offering. Although it is a striker fired pistol, it is a double action/single action pistol with a decorative lever.

The PPQ is a classic semi-automatic pistol with the lightest and fastest single trigger, widely considered to be one of the best triggers money can buy in any gun today.

The P99 and PPQ also hold 11+1 or 12+1 rounds of .40, depending on the magazine you get. One thing to note is that the .40 round can be very fast once it is fired, so you need to be prepared for that and have a lot of training to handle the recoil well.

Review] Glock 23: The Compact .40 S&w

Any of these .40 caliber pistols is a good choice for home defense, concealed carry, self defense, or occasional use. The FBI has wanted the .40 Smith & Wesson to be the personal defense round for decades. But the 9mm vs. .40S&W war continues. (Photo by FBI)

But for those not yet emotionally attached to a single cartridge, let's talk about the 9mm Parabellum and the .40 Smith & Wesson.

It is a commonly held myth that the .40 S&W was developed for the FBI because the 9mm failed in the infamous 1986 Miami shooting. However, the FBI's standard pistol at the time was the .38 Special Combatant.

FBI Director James Comey unveiled a three-panel memorial exhibit that tells the story of the FBI Miami Shootout of 1986. It's this gun battle that spawned decades of debate over the .40S&W round and which round is best. (FBI photo)

There were 9mm rounds in that fight. And one is said to have gradually settled in the heart of the offender.

But after the shooting in Miami, the FBI decided they needed to replace their revolvers with semi-automatic pistols. Semi-automatic revolvers hold many rounds and are easy to reload.

And, since
